Interoperability

Healthcare interoperability refers to accessing, sharing, exchanging and using electronic health information (EHI). By collaborating regionally among independent healthcare organizations for sharing clinical information, organizations can deliver, coordinate and manage care. Often, administrative information is shared as well. Interoperability encompasses adopting and advancing interoperability rules, standards, technologies, platforms and frameworks. Healthcare interoperability technologies, standards and trust frameworks enable the compliant interchange and sharing of EHI, allowing clinicians and legitimate stakeholders to safely access a patient’s medical record when and where they need to. Interoperability allows disparate IT systems to share EHI to facilitate quality care delivery and coordination and contain costs.
